To be, or not to be; what was the question

Regarding the recent meme that’s been going around our little blogging community, I got to thinking about one of the questions----Your favorite quote. I came up with the one that I use in my blog header, “a little nonsense…….,” from Willie Wonka; but, there are many others I could have used as well.

I enjoy reading quotes from “famous” people. On my cub scout web site, I was always throwing in quotes for our families to read. To see the humor, wit, wisdom, knowledge, etc. etc. of people illuminated in a few sentences is fascinating to me. Of course, quotes can also demonstrate the entire lack of any of these attributes on the part of the speaker as well.

Personally, I really dislike the whole concept of ‘your favorite’ this or that. It’s like somebody asking me, “what was your favorite apple you’ve ever eaten?” That’s pretty hard to pinpoint. The same goes for quotes, bible verses, books, movies, yada-yada-yada. There are just too many good choices for this type of question.

Another reason I don’t like fielding these types of questions is that I feel I need to come up with something really deep and meaningful. If somebody asks me my favorite quote, and theirs is from John Paul Sartre, I feel awfully silly saying mine is from Willie Wonka. Some people take great stock in living their lives by the admonitions of supposed great thinkers in the history of the world.

The only quotes I would put any stock into would be bible verses, and even then I can’t nail down just one all-time quote. I’m always amazed when I hear stories of people, particularly the giants of Christianity, who say that some verse had totally transformed their life. I haven’t had that kind of experience yet in my walk. Right now I’m trying to get my fingers wrapped around Psalm 34, “taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Anyway, I like quotes period, whether they’re deep and meaningful, or shallow and silly. With the fishing opener coming up, I’d like to share one more of my all-time ‘favorite’ quotes.

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Steven Wright

Ah, I can’t resist. Here’s a few more from Steven Wright, I love a lot of his.

It's a small world but I wouldn't want to paint it.

Curiosity killed the cat, but for a while I was a suspect.

When I woke up this morning my girlfriend asked me, 'Did you sleep good?' I said 'No, I made a few mistakes.'
