Organ transplant patient could be in danger as a result of Lake Michigan crash
A transplant patient awaiting an organ being delivered on a plane that crashed in Lake Michigan could become the seventh fatality of the accident if another organ can't be found quickly.
This sounds like a bad episode of House. I've been through some intense emotional situations in my life. I was there at the hospital with my god-daughter when she was diagnosed with Leukemia, which ultimately did kill her. I've been through numerous surgeries and medical procedures with MM, JR and Hannah. I can not imagine what everybody involved in this situation must have felt at the time they heard what happened. There must have been a rush of hope among the patient, his family, and the medical team, when they found the organ; but then to hear this news as he was on the operating table. Fact is stranger, and more heartbreaking, than fiction.
A recent NTSB study found that accidents involving emergency medical services flights - those carrying patients or organs for transplant - have been increasing. Between January 2002 and January 2005 there were 55 such accidents and 54 deaths.
It seems to me that these figures are quite the anomaly as it relates to over-all air safety. I can see speeding in a ground transportation situation leading to accidents in the medical field; but plane crashes. Something doesn't seem kosher in Denmark. They should check and see if squirrels have a hand in this.

They're using small planes on tight time schedules--this isn't as surprising as one might think, sad to say. Combine that with tight budgets (= older planes), and you've got a recipe for periodic disasters.
