This day in history: May 29

363 - Roman Emperor Julian defeats the Sassanid army in the Battle of Ctesiphon, under the walls of the Sassanid capital, but is unable to take the city.

Well who doesn't remember this? I think I learned this in 2nd grade. Modern day Sassanids are still bitter about it.

1953- Mount Everest was conquered as Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first climbers to reach the summit

Which led to mothers in the late 50's yelling at their kids: Just because Edmund Hillary climbed Mt. Everest doesn't mean you have to try something stupid.
