Last night, Mocha-momma and I had the pleasure to listen to some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard live, and you'll be surprised to hear who the performers were.
We belong to a bible study group with a few other couples from our church. We've decided to make one outing a month be a social activity, and last night we all chose to attend a high school choir concert that one of our friend's son was performing in. For the local readers in MN, it was at Wayzata High School.
Oh my goodness. These kids were absolutely fantastic. They had about 5 different choir groups that performed, and every one of them were a joy to listen to. Our friend's son is in the chamber choir, which I understand is their elite group. They had probably close to 100 kids over-all, but the chamber choir is limited to the top 18 performers who choose to audition for it.
Two particular moments stood out last night. One was a piece called ANI MA'AMIN (I Believe), which is a Hebrew song that has been sung for centuries, and which according to the narrator, is a song that was sung by Jews as they were being led into the gas chambers. There was a young lady who did a violin accompaniment, and was she wonderful. It was very moving. The other was a Scottish tune (or Irish, I can't remember) called Loch Lammond. There was a solo part that some young man performed, and did he ever do a marvelous job, just a beautiful tenor voice.
Listening to this kind of talent from high school kids absolutely puts to shame the whole American Idol craze. If these young people, from one high school in the USA, can perform this well, it gives me a desire to hear a professional choir; which is saying quite alot coming from a Lynnard Skynnard fan.
