I am a Mexican artist; I was married (twice) to Diego Rivera; I had an affair with Leon Trotsky, and he was assassinated in my home in Mexico City, 1940. Who am I?
If you know this, get your butt to Keegans on Thursday night for the trivia contest. I've never heard of this woman; and if you have, you're a better man than I Gunga Din.
Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo exhibit this fall at Walker (Star Tribune)
The Walker Art Center will open a show in late October of 50 paintings by Frida Kahlo, the celebrated Mexican artist whose work mythologized her tragic life and tempestuous romances.
A self-taught painter, Kahlo (1907-1954) melded traditional Mexican imagery with autobiography and surrealism.
Another case of being on the same planet, but living in a whole separate world. I wonder if we took a poll of say 10,000 Minnesotans; how many of them would actually have been able to identify this artist? How many people would actually say they're excited about the opportunity to go see what this woman painted in her lifetime? Of those who might know about her, and are interested in her paintings, how many are Norwegian or Swedish, and how many of them would come from our large Mexican population?
I'm not sophisticated at all when it comes to art. I enjoy going to an art gallery or museum and browse around every now and then; but unless this woman had a great series titled "Chihouhous Playing Poker" I don't know that I'd go specifically to see her work.
p.s. I think this blog will be a classic one day which mythologizes the tempestuous romance between Mocha-momma and myself. I love the word: tempestuous
