Man's Best Friend vs Girl's Best Friend

It's that time of year again; let me just get this annual rant out of my system, then Mocha-momma won't have to hear it again for another year.

I don't think I need to go into a whole lot of detail in outlining the contributions made by dogs in the betterment of society, families, and individual lives. Dogs have proven themselves to be a major asset in a multitude of areas, including---transportation, security, lifesaving, assisted living, police work; as well as simply being loving and comforting companions to children and adults alike. They have truly been a best friend to mankind, and a blessing from God.

On the other side of the coin, you have a girl's best friend, at least according to Marilyn Monroe and Hollywood---diamonds. And to this I say: pffffffffffffffttttttt; diamonds are simply polished up rocks, and over-rated beyond imagination.

Let's get some basic facts from Wikipedia.

A diamond is a transparent crystal of tetrahedrally bonded carbon atoms. (they're rocks that come from underground)

Popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques, growth in the world economy, and innovative and successful advertising campaigns. (they're rocks that aren't rare, they get all prettied up and polished by man, and then get peddled by the same type of people who peddle two-ply toilet paper as something you absolutely need in life to survive)

There are also allegations that the De Beers Group misuses its dominance in the industry to control supply and manipulate price via monopolistic practices, although in recent years the company's market share has dropped to below 60%. (prices have nothing to do with them being precious or rare, it has eveything to do with greed and gouging people based on myths)

OK, so lets try and understand some basic things about diamonds, or just about any other type of precious gems.

If they're so rare and precious, why are there like 15 jewelry stores found in every mall in every city of the world? You can't swing a dead cat and not find some jeweler selling diamonds and advertising that they have the best out there and at the greatest prices.

What's the difference between somebody taking a diamond and polishing it up nice and shiny and any other pretty rock or agate that you can find prettied up and polished in the billion or so souvenir shops around the world?

Are these rocks really worth all the death and mayhem they've wrought on mankind because of this misconception that they're so precious; and is life really somehow made better if you get them and dangle them from your ears or stick-pin one on your nose?

Did owning big, expensive rocks help women like Elizabeth Taylor have deep and meaningful relationships with spouses, or stop them from becoming pathetic, obese, drug-addicted, depressed has-beens?

Ah heck, I could rant on about this all night. Just think about it this Valentine's Day. What kind of woman are you involved with? Would she really want you to get her some glorified rock that cost's you a month's salary; or, would she rather have you show her your love in hundreds of other ways that are alot more meaningful than getting a rock and piercing her body to wear it, or worse, sticking it in a box and pulling it out maybe a handful of times throughout the year.

I'm done. MM doesn't necessarily endorse these views. I know my wife though, and I know what to get her that she appreciates more than rocks.

my dad is a jeweler. and yes, diamonds are overpriced. all gems are.
since i have a dad connection, i get stuff cheap. and has really helped with the women.
they dont know the $500 ruby bracelet i bought them only costs me about $75. but thats ok. if they wanted to give me $500 dollars worth of love, i took it.

now... the Blonde is different. she knows the true value, because i told her. but, she's very happy with a sensible CZ that looks pretty.(and actually prefers it)
that is the difference. she wants pretty. she dont want expensive. and is one reason why i married her.

i bought her a nice setting, and she picked out the stone. she chose, i'm not kidding, a 1.25 ct CZ.(bout $10), dad mounted it, and other women rave to her about it almost daily.
she gets a kick out of that.
i gave her a $1500 limit(my price. about 6ooo for you). she still wanted that $10 CZ instead.
just gotta love a woman like that,ya know...

Diamonds... Bah. They're great for industrial application, not so much for anything else. Emeralds are prettier then diamonds, as are Fire Opal.

Great post.

Gino, you blessed man.
