Dear Lord in heaven, save us from people with this kind of mindset and who would ask this question about today's issues: What Would Wellstone Have Done?
That's the title of an article prominently featured on the front page of the Strib's Opinion Page. I can't wait to visit Anti-Strib tomorrow and see the response to this one. According to this guy, there's not one person alive today who is standing up to all the wrong being committed in the world; and if only Paul were still here, his lone voice would be ringing out against all the crimes against humanity that conservatives, republicans and the Bush administration are perpetrating on all the unfortunates in the world who don't have their own voice.
Let's see, in most major sports a guy has to be retired for 5 years before he can be enshrined in the hall of fame. Is there a time limitation about how long a guy has to be dead before he's canonized as a saint in the church of liberalism. I know there's a group of true believers in Minnesota who would love to see this happen. I even wrote about it in my fictional account of the MN Organization of Liberal Democrats Convention. I talk about the Church of Paul, and how the Wellstonians have their own 'Paul's Prayer:'
Dear Paul, who art in heaven, may God listen to everything you say; your will and vision be done, in Minnesota as it was in Moscow. Give us everything we can get from the haves, and let us give it to the have nots. Take us not down the path of responsibility and discipline; but lead us down the path of entitlement and welfare. May your little Green Bus be our transportation into the kingdom that we all deserve, and may we not have to sacrifice anything to get there. For we have the numbers, the irrationality, and the deceitful hearts to git-er-done. Amen.
Let me say this about Paul Wellstone, he may have had a big heart and truly loved people and wanted the best for them; but, so does Barney the Dinosaur, and I wouldn't vote him in as a senator making decisions that affect local, national and world events. Like all democrats who run for office, this guy made a million promises based on his first scaring the crap out of senior citizens, working mothers, children, and any other liberal special interest group that he could; then, he failed to follow through on any of those promises, because one guy just can't do it, especially when the opposition has reason, sanity and common sense on its side. To top it off, he made one huge promise, to only serve for one term, then he brazenly broke that one.
I have one very vivid memory of Paul Wellstone that sticks in my mind, apart from his disgusting politics. The year he was running against Coleman, we were in Apple Valley for their 4th of July parade. It was hot that day, so hot you could cook eggs on the pavement. We were sitting at the very end of the parade route. Norm Coleman and his group of people came by shaking hands, full of energy, and looking as fresh as daisies, ready to go another 2 or 3 miles. Later, Paul Wellstone came through, walking by himself in the middle of the road, head down, hopping along like Festus from Gunsmoke, and looking like death warmed over, I was hoping there was an ambulance waiting at the end to help revive him. It didn't mean anything regarding whether I'd vote for the guy, because I wasn't going to anyway; but it was just the image of our senator from MN looking like some special olympic participant crossing the line in the marathon event that sticks in my mind.
Oh well, I hope the guys at Anti-strib do a great number on this article and the writer.
