Have gun, will moonlight

I heard some local dj’s talking about a recent assault on one of the metro buses. The comment was made that soon they’re going to need armed security on every bus, just like the air marshal system with airlines. I don’t know that it well ever happen, but it made me think about my brother, the cop, down in Houston.

I don’t think Houston has cops on buses either; but I know they have off-duty cops in just about every retail store, gin house, hen house and out house within the city limits. The first time I went down to visit him we ran over to the local sports store to get golf balls, and I was amazed to find a cop standing near the registers. I know cops up here may get hired by private businesses, but it’s usually at a liquor store or something, not at Baby Gap.

My brother has moonlighted with a number of different jobs while he’s been there. He actually got a rent-free apartment one time because the landlord felt that just the knowledge that a cop was in the building kept everyone mellow. He has worked security at a furniture store for about 15 years. It works, in all that time not one armoire has been stolen, and of course the owner has never been robbed. He also worked at a bank for many years. The bank he worked for has not been robbed that whole time; the bank across the street does not hire security, and it’s been robbed multiple times over the same period. The message that someone in a uniform carrying a loaded hand-gun can send out is amazing.

I don’t know that Minneapolis will ever get to the same level as Houston, at least not if they keep electing liberal mayors. It would be unfortunate to get to that level. I don’t see that we need armed guards everywhere now, except for maybe one place----Chuck E Cheese, help keep all those little wild banshees in line while the adults are trying to eat their pizza and think straight.
