Have you found the ‘one thing’ in life that Curly talked about in the film City Slickers. I was watching the Food Network this weekend and there was a show on a woman who was a fanatic about making Chili. I admit I have not found that kind of passion in doing anything in my life; but I do appreciate and love listening to passionate and devoted people, whether it be about their work or a hobby.
A couple of my favorite examples---the twins who are furniture experts on Antique Roadshow, and the little geeky looking guy with a beard on the PBS gardening show Victory Garden. I swear that these guys are going to have an orgasm when I listen to them talk about a federalist period rocking chair, or the best way to grow a lycopersicon, which you obviously must know means ‘wolf peach’ in Latin, or as laymen would call it---a tomato.
I’ve almost reached the half-century mark of my life, and have yet to find such a passion; on the other hand, I enjoy a lot of different activities and mix it up as much as I can. The plus side is I keep my mind occupied and never get bored with any one thing; the negative side is that I don’t make any money in doing the things I enjoy. Oh well, maybe I’ll be like Grandma Moses---I’ll start painting and become a famous artist after the age of 50.
