I've tried this; unfortunately, I've always lost out in favor of having a T.V. room or a kid's play area. My last option might to be setting up an area in the crawl space under our house.
This reminds me of the psychologist who came out with the concept of 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.' One of his big themes was that men needed a cave to hide in every once in a while. He even posited that men sit in front of the tv and lock themselves away in their mind, just because they don't have any other place to disappear for a while. (Everything the guy said about male and female relationships might have been given more merit had it not been for the fact that he'd been married about 4-5 times himself)
