colossal half-ton squid, believed to be the largest ever caught, may be destined for the microwave oven.
But researchers say they don't want to cook the massive creature _ just defrost it so they can study it better.
Expert Steve O'Shea said the squid had weighed in at 1,089 pounds and measured 33 feet long _ heavier but shorter than initial estimates of 990 lbs and 39 feet.
The mammoth squid could not be left to defrost at room temperature because the process would take days, leaving the outside to rot while the core remained frozen, he said.

These guys need to go to an expert. My suggestion---get this would be sushi dish to Rachel Ray. She has a cooking show on Food Network called 30-minute Meals. If anybody could get this sucker thawed out, it would be her. They'd just have to be careful that Emeril Lagasse didn't get his hands on it; before they know it, they'd be looking at some huge batch of Cajun Squid.
