We had our Cub Scout Family Bowling Tournament this last weekend. It’s always a lot of fun; that is to say, the fun starts after the initial chaos of getting all the kids and other bowlers in the assigned lanes and names set up in the system.
It’s always a hilarious sight seeing the different bowling styles that these 1st thru 5th graders employ; as well as seeing how having the gutter-bumpers up affect the ball going down a lane. With some of the bowlers you could brew a cup of coffee in the time it takes the ball to get down the lane. In other cases, it’s amazing to see some little kid walk up to the line, barely able to carry the ball he chose, and just wing it with all his might.
We gave away prizes for strikes, and the excitement level of the kids who got one was a sight to behold. The ball may have bounced side to side the entire way down the lane, but a strike is a strike in this game.
After our next pack meeting on the 18th, the next big event is the Pinewood Derby on January 14. That is definitely the highlight of the year. A few years ago we purchased a brand new aluminum track. We have some fantastic den leaders who get into this big time, and they set up camcorders and timers at the finish line that are hooked into an LCD projector. We had another dad who made some wooden pit rows and award stands. Another dad creates signs and posters that we have up all over. It’s an amazing event and NASCAR would envy the racing day that we have. The kids have a ball, and just like the bowling, they compete---but the spirit is fun and excitement and encouragement of each other across the board.
Beyond that we have an ice fishing contest, family swim day at a local community center; this year we’re having our first Mother/Son Dance. This is all above and beyond our regular pack and den activities. Scouting is alive and well in Rockford; as well as America. This is all in spite of the persecution and attacks waged on us by the ACLU. Down with this heathen left, communist organization.

I love bowling. I do it for exercise in the winter, by playing alone and just playing one after the other. I just met some bowlers to bowl with too. You call them "pinpals."
In my youth we were in 4H. I love to remember the good old days in small town America.
I was only in Cub Scouts for about a year, but I did make one racing car for the pinewood derby. Honestly, it was horrible. I had no idea how to make it and my dad was a financial advisor. In other words, he hadn't the foggiest idea either. This is kind of sad, but I was so bummed by the whole thing that I quit. Now you know why I grew up reading books. I was a lousy pine carver! If I could go back in life this is one of the things that I would actually change.
