I thought this was interesting; but maybe for those of you more well versed in computer technology, its old hat or maybe already outdated.
At work, we have to go through the security trainings because we have access to customer's personal information, such as credit card numbers; so they're very serious about our having secure passwords. One of our recent trainings provided these figures re: the breaking of passwords by software; this is what they told us---
Length/Type How long to break
6 Alpha .25 hr
8 Alpha 9 hrs
6 Alpha/Numeric 1 hr
8 Alpha/Numeric 36 hrs
14 Alpha/Numeric 248 hrs
In my case, you break one password---you've broken em all.
